Point & Image Data Fusion for Target Signature Detection in Clutter


The overall aim of the project is to assess the combined use of point and image data in improving the identification a target signature amongst differing levels of clutter. Specifically in this case we will be attempting to recognise the presence of ship wakes (target) automatically from an ocean background with variable sea state conditions, from calm to rough seas (clutter).

A moving ship generates a wake which consists of a characteristic surface wave pattern confined to a wedge-shaped region behind the ship (called Kelvin wake), and a turbulent wake along the track of the ship. Such a ship wake can be seen in the remote sensing images, with certain of resolution, acquired by the sensor aboard the satellites. Hence, thorough understanding of ship wakes in satellite images is relevant for correctly interpreting the images with the aim of monitoring ship traffic and states.
