Evolutionary Directions for Telecommunications Satellite Payloads


The presentation will provide an overview of the evolutionary pressures on payloads, introduce some major themes for the future and identify the challenges facing the industry. Examples of both incremental technology advances and disrupter technologies will be discussed. Key technologies wil be identified which facilitate large capacity geostationary payloads in mobile, fixed and broadband applications. The key developments needed to enable these payloads involve phased array antennas and digital processing. Key antenna technologies include MEMS, GaN and phased array architectures and these will need to be demonstrated in orbit prior to customer acceptance.
