Slot Clouds, Smarter Onboard Buses and Satellite Networking

Networking via satellites is currently done by a range of separate, non-interoperable systems that provide very different services over their own satellite link protocols to their own users. Isolated satellites supporting these systems cannot communicate directly with their incompatible satellite neighbours. This talk outlines how trends towards satellite spotbeams, complex payloads and onboard DSP could be leveraged to introduce increasing interoperability and direct communication between systems and satellites, and bring increased networking into space. The Cisco mobile access router onboard SSTL's UK-DMC satellite will also be discussed.
