Flexible and Lightweight Solar Cells for Space Applications
Solar cells for power generation in space are currently based on Si and III-V semiconductors. These wafer based solar cells are rigid, fragile, heavy, expensive, and unstable when irradiated with electrons and protons in space. Flexible and lightweight thin film solar cells based on polycrystalline compound semiconductors, Cu(In,Ga)Se2 (called CIGS) and CdTe have a great potential for a variety of space applications because of superior radiation tolerance, high specific power (W/kg) and low cost. Development of high efficiency thin film solar cells for space applications will be presented.
