Stanford’s Experience in Small Satellites

Professor Robert Twiggs, eight years ago, developed the Space System Development Laboratory at Stanford University with the goal of giving students the opportunity to gain hands-on education of spacecraft design. During that time the laboratory has successfully flown two micro-satellites, designed and built two additional micro-satellites, and is currently developing six nano and pico class satellites. This presentation will address the development of Stanford’s Space System Development Laboratory, introducing students to the design, construction, and operation of small satellites. The two micro satellites, Sapphire and Opal, will be discussed as well as the history, development and lessons learned in the satellite design process by students.
