"SMALLSATS & TRADITIONAL SATELLITES: WHAT’S DIFFERENT?"-  the 11th of April, Tuesday, at 11am in the seminar room U13

 Abstract:

This lecture presents an outline of the ‘philosophy’ of the Faster, Better, & Cheaper (FBC) approaches to satellite design, implementation, and operations. In particular, the most characteristic properties of the FBC philosophy are identified and assessed: this covers the areas of Project Management, Team Organisation, System Engineering, Reliability & Risk Management, as well as Cost and Schedule aspects.

The differences in the characteristics of the FBC approaches relative to methods used in traditional satellite programs are highlighted. The cost-effectiveness of both approaches based on actual mission data will be evaluated and compared. Finally, a survey of present US Small Satellites with scientific mission objectives will be
