Earth Observation data have been used by the military for landscape modeling and visualisation for some time, but this use has largely been classified.
We are engaged in an on-going project for major utilities in the Electricity Supply Industry that exploits Earth Observation data for the modeling and visualisation of structures placed in realistic landscapes. In particular we are creating simulations of planned power-lines, as they would appear in situ in a particular terrain. This work has been found to be especially helpful with wayleaf issues, and other impact assessments. The presentation will place particular emphasis on the contribution of Earth Observation data to the project.
