Welcome to Tim Brown's Home Page. I am working as a lecturer in mobile
communications at the Centre for
Communication Systems Research (CCSR) at the University of Surey. I am currently pursuing
research interests in antennas and channel characterisation/modelling for
multiple input multiple output (MIMO) and ultra wideband (UWB) applications. My
teaching activity is on the Department's Antennas and Propagation Course
from September 2007.
From November 2004 to December 2006 I worked as a Research Fellow (or Assistant Research Professor in local terms) at Aalborg University in Denmark, within the Department of Electronic Systems and working within the Antennas, Propagation and Networking Section. My research interests are working towards Multiple Input Multiple Output (MIMO) systems with a focus on stochastic modelling of antennas and propagation at the mobile for use in broadband communications. More information can be found from released publications as well as other publications in the pipeline. In 2002, I completed my PhD with thesis title "Antenna Diversity for Mobile Terminals". I undertook my research at the Centre for Communication Systems Research (CCSR) in the School of Electronics, and Physical Sciences - Electrical Engineering Department at the University of Surrey, Guildford, UK. From January 2007 I will be returning to CCSR as a lecturer in mobile communications. |
Specialist research interests include mobile handset antennas, RF antenna design, optimisation and characterisation. I have also have teaching experience in in engineering business applications, laboratory supervision and tutoring. My supervisor was Dr Simon Saunders who specialises in research in intelligent antennas for mobile communications and also mobile radio propagation.
After completing my PhD in October 2002 (examined in December 2002 and passed in January 2003), I began two year's term of office as a sabbatical officer working as General Secretary of the National Postgraduate Committee (NPC). The NPC is a charity set to advance, in the public interest, postgraduate education in the United Kingdom. Having been an officer of NPC part time whilst being a postgraduate, my interests led to standing for their only sabbatical position as General Secretary. This position is the only national postgraduate sabbatical position in the UK, which works for the interests of half a million postgraduates nationwide. The post involved the general running of NPC and being consulted on a wide range of postgraduate issues throughout the UK. This included anything from better representation in a student body through to playing a critical role in the national agenda for higher education. This has involved a variety of activities including publication writing, keynote speaking, involvement in national working groups, government forums and running a consultation service. This led up to November 2004 where I began my current post in Aalborg.
