EurIng Dr Richard G. Forbes,
Visiting Reader in Applied Electrophysics
MA, PhD, DSc, CEng, CSci, CPhys,
Foreign Member, Russian Academy of Natural Sciences
FIEE, FInstP, FIoN, SenMem IEEE, FRSA
EurIng Dr Richard G Forbes studied at
Trinity College, Cambridge, where he received a Tripos Prize, a Senior
Scholarship and a Research Scholarship. He specialised in his first degree in
Physics (Theoretical Option), and did his PhD research in the Department of
Metallurgy and Materials Science in Cambridge, initially under the supervision
of Sir Alan Cottrell, FRS. He did postdoctoral work at Aston University,
subsequently becoming a Lecturer in Physics. He moved to Surrey University in 1983, becoming Reader
in Applied Electrophysics in the University's Advanced Technology Institute, which is
associated with the School of
Electronics and Physical Sciences.
He is now a Visiting Reader.
Dr
Forbes has worked in the general area of charged surfaces, field electron
emission and field-ion emission for about forty years, and is well known
internationally in this area, for which a modern name might be 'Nanoscale
Electrical Science'. Major recent interests have been in the theory of
field electron emission, in the theory of liquid metal ion sources, and in the theory of field evaporation.
He was
awarded his DSc in 1983 for work on charged surfaces and field ion emission. He
is a Fellow of the Institute of Physics, of the Institution of Engineering and
Technology, and of the Institute of Nanotechnology, and has recently been
elected as a Foreign Member of the Russian Academy of Natural Sciences. He has published over 130 papers,
and has made over 340 conference presentations. He was President of the
International Field Emission Society from 1996 to 2000 and from 2002 to 2006,
and is currently Vice-President.
Dr
Forbes has been an elected member of the Senate and Council of Surrey
University, and on numerous university committees. His main external interests
are in the encouragement of practical engineering activities in schools; he is
Chairman of the Board of Trustees/Directors of the Surrey SATRO.
