Milford Sound is a misnomer since it is realy a fiord  carved out by a glacier 1.5M years ago. It seems to have become the number one attraction in the South Island despite a bad sandfly problem and 7m of rain a year.

The best part is getting there; through the Fiordland National Park and a 1000m climb up to the 1.2km Homer Tunnel.

Mitre Peak rises 1,692m up from the water. So called because its shape is said to resemble a Bishop's cap (mitre). Imaginative people the Kiwis.
