The A1 was, loosely speaking, originally the Roman road from London to York: Ermine Street. Rather appropriate, then, that the Museum of London should be plonked right in the middle of it.

If our friends in sandles had walked past where Poultry in EC2 is now then this is what they might have seen. The museum's reconstruction of a tavern and light industrial area derived from archaeology carried out during redevelopment there.

They'd have trouble recognizing it now. On the left is Mansion House. In the middle the new No.1 Poultry and, just out of frame on the right, the Bank of England.
