Every bank holiday the motorways leading out of The Smoke are clogged with Londoners trying to find unspoilt countryside. With Farthing Down so near why do they bother? Besides, the A23 is easier to jam up.

The Down is now part of the London Loop long distance path which circles the capital. It also retains traces of iron age field boundaries, and grazing animals have been reintroduced in an attempt to preserve the ancient ecology.
