Shots of the castle are two a penny, so here instead is one of the town
centre taken from the castle (and too late in the day to avoid haze
exept by stretching the contrast way past the cipping limits).
The prominent road is Castle Street. In the centre is St. Mary's church, behind which is the back of the main shopping area. Between these shops and the tower blocks at the foot of the Western Heights lie remains of the Roman shore fort. Photos verbotten :-(

The lighthouse or pharos is (on thin evidence) two
centuries earlier and was paired with a second on the Western Heights.
A guesstimate of the original height is 24m.
The Church of St. Mary-in-Castro (to the right) was built around AD1000 and, for a time, used the pharos as a separate bell-tower.
