Richard's Photo Gallery - Portchester

Portchester castle was built over a span of sixteen centuries. It is the best preserved of the Roman 'Saxon Shore' forts.

The view from the top of the keep. If you had lugged half a ton of 35mm kit (including a polarising filter - just the job to cut glare from the sea) to the top of a staircase designed to make ascending it hard, then would you have taken this shot with a compact?
Across the centre: south wall of the Roman fort (3rd. cent. onwards).
Bottom left: gatehouse from the Norman period.
Centre left: 12th. cent. church from an Augustinian priory.
Centre right: gatehouse in west wall.
Top left: Portsmouth.
Top right: Gosport.
In the harbour: the submarine HMS Osiris - purchased by a local scrap dealer.
