Dating back to at least 1153 Berkeley has been home to the family for 24 generations. In 1327 King Edward II was 'orribly murdered in the room whose windows are in the centre of the picture. Ineffectual leaders are not treated this way today. A donation to a new University in California resulted in its taking the family name (or so I was told).

The Elizabethan gardens have fine views. Top notch tea room, guided tour, butterfly farm, souveniers etc. The church is also worth a look.
