Getting to the University Getting around campus

Getting to the University

The University has good transport links by either road or rail. We are also approximately equi-distant from London Heathrow and London Gatwick Airports.

Click here for a regional map. Click here for a map of the University of Surrey campus (PDF), and here for an alternative version.

By Road
The University is located in the town of Guildford, adjacent to the A3, and only 15 minutes from the M25 (junction 10). Remain on the A3 until you reach the exit signed to Cathedral and University (don't take the exit signed Guildford). Please note: we do not recommend bringing a car. However, if you wish to do so, there is a daily parking fee (weekdays only) of 7 and you must notify us well in advance so that we may organise a parking permit for you.

From Guildford Train Station
It is a 15 minute walk from the station to the campus. By foot leave the station via the footbridge and rear exit, turn right into Guildford Park Road, after 200 metres (just past the Evangelical Church), turn right and walk through Borough Car Park. Otherwise there is a regular bus service (route 17, 27 and 37) between the rear exit of the station and the University. (The bus to the University leaves from the opposite side of the road from the rear exit of the train station.) These run every 10 minutes between 7.30 and 19.30, and every 30 minutes until 23.00. Fares between the University and town centre/train station are 50p for a single and 70p for a return. There are several bus stops on campus, which are clearly sign-posted. You can also take a taxi from the main exit of the station for just under 5.00.

From London by Rail
Guildford is on the main London (Waterloo) to Portsmouth line and South West Trains provides a frequent service. Use Guildford Station for the University. There are usually 3 or 4 fast trains every hour, and quite a few slow ones! The express trains to Portsmouth are usually the quickest to Guildford and stop at the fewest number of stations. The fast train takes about 40 minutes and costs about 10.

From London Gatwick Airport
Gatwick Station is positioned in the South Terminal of the airport and provides direct rail-air link trains to Guildford, hourly between 05.28 and 23.18 weekdays and 05.31 and 23.18 weekends, with a journey time of 38 minutes. This is the best way of getting to Guildford from Gatwick.
Gatwick Express operates a dedicated non-stop service every 15 minutes throughout the day between Gatwick Airport and London Victoria Station.

From London Heathrow Airport
Rail-Air link coaches leave terminal 4 (Arrivals level) for Woking Station from 7.20 to 23.10, picking up from terminals 2 (Departures level), 3 (Arrivals level) and 1 (Arrivals level). The journey to Woking takes about 30-40 minutes and the coaches leave every 30 minutes. There are then frequent trains from Woking to Guildford, taking about 10 minutes. Tickets for the coach only are available from the Bus and Coach Information Desk in Terminals 1, 3 and 4 or on the coach at Terminal 2. Combined bus and rail tickets for all Rail-air services can be purchased at the Bus Coach and Train Information Desk in Terminal 1 or at most rail stations. This is the best method from Heathrow Airport.
There is also a non-stop express train service between the airport and central London (Paddington Station), the "Heathrow Express". It takes 15-20 minutes and costs 13.00 for a single and 25.00 for return. If you're flying out of Heathrow there are airline check-in facilities at Paddington Station. This station is located on the District and Circle lines of the London Underground network. The airport is also connected directly to the Piccadilly Underground Line and provides a slightly cheaper method of getting to the capital (and slightly longer!).

From London City Airport
London City Airport is located in London's Docklands. London City Airport operate 2 shuttle bus services. One serves Liverpool Street and Canary Wharf; the second serves Canning Town. Journey time is 30 minutes from Liverpool Street; 10 minutes from Canary Wharf; 7 minutes from Canning Town. Both buses run every 10 minutes. If you take the bus to Liverpool Street Station, an underground train on the Circle Line can then be taken to Embankment, and then one southbound stop on the Northern or Bakerloo Line to Waterloo Station. A train to Guildford can then be taken from here (see above "London by Rail").

From Luton Airport
A free rail shuttle bus leaves from Bay 1 in the Main Terminal to Luton Airport Parkway Station (1.8km away). It is then only 30 minutes into London by train. The trains terminate at many different London stations, including St Pancras, but the underground can then be taken from any of these to Waterloo Station and then to Guildford.

From Stansted Airport
London Stansted Airport Station is located below the terminal building. There is an hourly service between the airport and London, stopping at all principal stations in-between. However, the Stansted Express is a more convenient service and has trains departing every 15-30 minutes, with an average journey time of approximately 45 minutes to London Liverpool Street Station. Once at Liverpool Street, an underground train on the Circle Line can then be taken to Embankment, and then one southbound stop on the Northern or Bakerloo Line to Waterloo Station. A train to Guildford can then be taken from here.

By Eurostar
Take the Eurostar train direct to London Waterloo Station terminus where you may then get a direct fast train to Guildford Station. See above "London by rail".
