Barbara Steel - Musician
Barbara Steel (LTCL, GTCL Hons) works at the University of Surrey as Manager of Continuing Education in the School of Electronics, Computing and Mathematics. She has been actively involved in the department for over eight years and is responsible for the Management, PR, Strategic Marketing and Administration for short courses in electronics and communications which provide training for engineers from the Satellite, Communications and Defence Industries. Over 300 delegates attend per year on average. Barbara is also associated with the Project Team for UnisDirect and has designed and implemented Seminars and courses for the business community in Surrey. More recently she has been involved in the "Women for Business" Project.
Barbara has been playing the violin since the age of 7 and has been actively involved in professional music for the last 15 years leading and playing in concerts and shows all over the South East. She trained for four years at Trinity College of Music and has obtained her Performer's and Teaching Diplomas in Violin and Singing and a GTCL degree (BMus). Music as a "hobby" takes up much of her spare time. She loves leading Shows but prefers to take a back seat when playing in concerts! When not involved in activities musical she enjoys windsurfing, sailing and Scuba Diving - in fact anything to do with water and will spend as much of her holiday time on it or near it! Barbara is a member of the Imperial College Music Theatre Society Orchestra and takes part in their annual summer tour to Budleigh Salterton in Devon. This year the show is "Kiss me Kate" a departure from the usual G&S offering. Barbara is a regular visitor to Budleigh Salterton at other times of the year.
Barbara also runs a small professional orchestra which provides musicians for Societies putting on Shows and concerts in the South East area and also has a string quartet, established in November 1997, called the "Amethyst" Quartet which specialises in Weddings, Dinner parties etc.
Barbara's husband, Brian Steel, is a Musical
Director, Accompanist and Percussionist and also finds time to act as Technical
Director to Logic Programming Associates, a company involved in the design
and implementation of Prolog software.
